Peterson breaks own school record at Dubuque
Raylin Peterson Record
Raylin Peterson beat her own school record by 17 inches with a throw of 38-6 in the shot put in Black Hawk’s first track meet on Tuesday, March 14.

DUBUQUE — Senior Raylin Peterson started her senior track and field season with a bang, breaking her own school with a throw of 38-6 at the Steve Rutz Starter Meet at the University of Dubuque on Tuesday, March 14.

“We had several nice things happen, but the highlight was Raylin upping her school record in the shot put by 1-foot-five inches with a throw of 38-6,” Black Hawk head coach Eric Erickson said. “She had a very nice series, and this was no fluke.”

Peterson’s throw got her second place for eight points. She was just two inches short of Decorah’s Chloe Reiser. Peterson was the only Warrior to score points, as Black Hawk girls finished 12 of 14 teams. Maddy Lange, Ellie Edler, Molly Edler, Veronica Ceatham and Jaliyah Collins also competed at the varsity level.

On the boys side, Black Hawk scored eight points in 10 scored events, finishing tenth of 11 teams.

Lane Marty scored four points with his fifth-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles. He finished with a time of 9.37, which Eric Erickson thought was “conservative.” The 4x400 relay — comprised of Marty, Jovanny Erickson, Andrew Figi and James Holland — finished sixth of ten teams with a time of 3:59.43 for three points. Owen Seffrood took Hollan’s place in the 4x200 relay, where the team took eighth with a time of 1:41.61 for one point.

“The kids worked hard and many experienced the first high school meet of their young careers,” Eric Erickson said. “We started on a level I’m very pleased with.”
