PLATTEVILLE — To avoid cancellation in face of the forecasted snow storm, New Glarus and Platteville moved their doubleheader up a day to Wednesday, Dec. 21. The two teams split, with the Lady Knights coming out on top 65-61.
The New Glarus girls basketball team (8-0, 0-0 Capitol South), ranked seventh in Division 4, had a 26-22 lead at halftime. Grace Nommensen supplied the Knights with 10 points, all of them within the arc. Alex Atwell trailed with seven points with three baskets and one free throw. Meanwhile, Lindsey Schadewalt scored six points, followed by Bella Brenkman with two and Payton Schneider with one.
Platteville also had five girls score in the first half, led by Lizzie Poller with eight points. Camryn Nies trailed with six points. Ellie Temperly and Hailey Weigel each had three points from a basket and free throw, and Jaxcyn Berntgen had two.
The Knights and Hillmen were neck and neck in the second half, scoring 39 points each.
Nommensen scored another 10 in the second, while Schadewalt went off for 21 points, with two 3-pointers and three free throws. Emma Martinson got in the scorebook with a 3-point play completed at the free-throw line.
Poller and Nies led Platteville again in the second with 14 and 17 points, respectively. The pair sank three 3-pointers each. Gwyneth Erickson made her way into the scorebook with a basket.
Atwell finished with 10 points and a team-leading 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Schadewalt was the leading scorer with 27 points. She had both of the Knight’s 3-pointers. Nommensen was the second-highest scorer with 20 points and eight rebounds.
The duo of Poller and Nies supplied Platteville with 44 of its 61 points. On the boards, Erickson led with 11, followed by Maddison Carl with eight.
The New Glarus boys basketball team didn’t share the same outcome, though. The Knights shot just 2-for-18 from inside the arc in the first half and trailed 33-18 at halftime.
Of New Glarus’s 18 first-half points, 12 of them came from beyond the arc. Brett Warrell made two 3-pointers, followed by Max Parman and AC Strok with one each. Strok totaled eight points in the first half with two baskets, a three and a free throw.
Meanwhile, Davyn Edge led Platteville with 14 first-half points, 12 of which came from beyond the arc. Lucas Ludlum tallied eight points, while Wyatt Heer had the remaining 3-pointer for the Hillmen.
The Knights went point for point with the Hillmen in the second, but New Glarus couldn’t overcome the first-half deficit. The closest they were able to get was nine points.
Strok hit another four 3-pointers in the second half along with two buckets and a pair of free throws. Jack Leonard, who scored just one point in the first, recorded eight points in the second with a three, 3-point play completed at the free-throw line and additional basket. Breckyn Thompson and Ethan Friedrich also drained a 3-pointer each.
Garrison Tashner, Derek Digman and Zach McClain, who were all quiet in the first half, went off in the second for the Hillmen. Tashner scored six points, four of which came at the free-throw line. Digman, who was scoreless in the first, also tallied six points. McClain went 5-for-6 at the free-throw line with a bucket for seven second-half points.
Overall, Strok led New Glarus with 26 points and five 3-pointers. The second-highest scorer was Leonard with nine points. Warrell had two 3-pointers, while Thompson, Parman, Leonard and Friedrich had one each. The Knights were just 8-for-16 from the free-throw line.
Conversely, the Hillmen had four players in double figures. McClain scored 11 points with a team-leading 10 rebounds for a double-double. Edge was the team’s leading scorer with 19 points and four of Platteville’s six 3-pointers. The remaining two came from Heer. Ludlum tallied 18 points, while Tashner recorded 10.
