MONROE — While the Monroe-New Glarus swim team graduated some of its top swimmers a season ago, it returns a slew of talent.
As a freshman in 2021, Mazie Paradis was a state qualifier in four events — the 200-yard Individual Medley, the 100-yard butterfly, and was a member of MNG’s 200-medley relay and 400-free relay. She also broke five program records: 200-meter freestyle, 400-meter freestyle, 200-meter IM, 200-yard IM, and 100-yard fly.
Also back are state-qualifying swimmers Riley Hoesly and Delaney Lynch, plus state-alternate Danika Doll and junior sprint swimmer Kristina Foley.
“We are excited to have an incoming freshman class of eight swimmers this year,” said MNG co-coach Rachel Root, now in her fourth year coaching the program after starring in it a decade ago in high school. “They will all bring different strengths and positive qualities to the team this year.”
Anna Zentner, Megan Chapman, Brinlee Chapman, Maggie Piper, Piper Faber, Alexis Elgin, Amelia Geib and Abby Ryan are all entering their first fall in high school.
“Our goals for the upcoming season include making individual and team personal records (PRs) and having individual events and relays make it to state. Our expectations for this season include maintaining positive mindsets, having our swimmers support each other, and have an overall fun season,” said Haley Kaiser, MNG co-coach.
Root said that being one of the smaller teams in the large Badger Conference will be a challenge.
“Even though we are a smaller team, we will work on continuing to set individual and team PRs,” she said.
Madison Edgewood is once again expected to be the top team in the conference. Monroe went 3-4 in duals last season, with wins over Oregon, Portage and Lodi.
“They have very strong and versatile swimmers that practice competitively year-round,” Kaiser said.
The Cheesemakers bookend their season slate with meets at Sauk Prairie. The opener is the Badger West Relay Maat on Aug. 30, while the WIAA Division 2 sectional will be Nov. 5.
Monroe will host three duals this season at the Green County Family YMCA: Sept. 8 against Oregon, Sept. 20 against Mount Horeb, and Oct. 4 versus Sauk Prairie. The other eight meets on the schedule are all away, including the Oct. 29 varsity conference meet at Baraboo.
