ORFORDVILLE — The offense was efficient and the defense was stout for Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg as the Knights improved to 3-1 overall on the season with a 58-0 victory over host Parkview/Albany at Parkview High School on Friday. Sept. 9.

The Knights scored touchdowns on six of their 25 first-half plays from scrimmage and also added a score on defensive en route to a 51-0 halftime lead.

Senior fullback Colin Montayne rushed for two touchdowns and senior wide receiver Charlie Wiegel hauled in two TD receptions for BSMS in the first half, while senior halfback Nate Lawrence had a rushing TD and a passing TD and senior quarterback Jacob Duerr tossed a TD and returned an interception for another score.

Lawrence nearly fumbled the ball away approaching the goal line on the Knights’ opening drive of the game, but senior guard Landon Leahy was there to pounce on the loose ball in the end zone to put the guests ahead 6-0 just over two minutes into the contest.

Montayne ran one in from a yard out and Wiegel hauled in a 15-yard scoring strike from Lawrence on an option keeper to extend the BSMS lead to 22-0 by the close of the first quarter.

Lawrence ripped off a 55-yard TD jaunt and Montayne hit pay dirt from 34 yards out in the second quarter, while Duerr returned an interception 37 yards for a score and also hooked up with Wiegel on a 40-yard bomb to bump the advantage up to 51-0 at the intermission.

BSMS finished the first half out-gaining the Vikings (0-4) by a 340-82 margin. In addition to the pick-six, the Knights’ defense forced the hosts to punt twice and turn the ball over on downs four times in the first half.

In the second half, the Knights’ second-team unit got into the scoring act on a 9-yard TD run by freshman Parker Mullen. The second-team defense forced the Vikings to punt once and turn the ball over on downs twice in the second half to preserve the program’s shutout for the first time since a 28-0 week two win over Cambridge in the Knights’ inaugural season in 2019.

Lawrence ran 12 times for 160 yards with a TD, completed his one pass attempt for 15 yards and a score, and had one catch for six yards. Montayne rushed four times for 44 yards and two scores, while Wiegel had two catches for 55 yards and two scores.

Duerr completed 5-of-6 passes for 108 yards with a TD. He also helped the Knights convert six of their eight point-after tries, completing a pair of two-point conversion passes to Max Wienen and Wiegel, running in another two-pointer and also booting two extra-point kicks. Lawrence ran in the other two-pointer.

Leahy registered a quarterback sack in the game to go along with his fumble-recovery TD. For the game, the Knights recorded 11 tackles for loss in the game and also knocked down four passes.

The Vikings ended the night with 91 rushing yards and 13 passing yards. Christian Hobon rushed 17 times for 44 yards and Karson Redman ran 12 times for 41 yards to lead the Vikings. Greyson Cramer was 3-of-12 passing for 13 yards with a pick.

BSMS finished this year’s Six Rivers-SWAL crossover games posting a 2-0 record. These games count towards the team’s playoff-qualifying standard, but do not count towards a conference title.

Parkview-Albany is 0-4 and hosts No. 5 Darlington in Week 5.
