Darlington takes third in own tournament

DARLINGTON — Darlington hosted a four-team tournament with Argyle, Benton-Shullsburg and Belleville on Saturday, April 15. The Redbirds took third with a 9-3 revenge win over Argyle.

In the third-place game, Jaylyn Schwartz went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Sophie Wiegel scattered nine hits over seven innings to collect the win. At leadoff, Argyle’s Mya McNett was also 3-for-4 with an RBI. She suffered the loss in the circle, though, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits.

In its opening game, Darlington fell to Belleville 9-4. Lylah Norgard led the offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBIs. Wiegel took the loss, giving up five earned runs in 5 2/3 innings pitched.

Benton-Shullsburg run-ruled Argyle in its opening game 18-3. Lexi Wonders went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and one RBI. McNett suffered the loss, giving up seven earned runs in five innings pitched. The Zephyrs went on to win the tournament 10-1 over Belleville.


CUBA CITY 12, DARLINGTON 0

CUBA CITY — Prior to its tournament, Darlington suffered a one-hit loss to Cuba City on Thursday, April 13. Ashlynn Norgard’s double was Darlington’s only hit of the game. Sydney Wiegel was the second Redbird to reach via walk. Sophie Wiegel took the loss, giving up seven earned runs in 1 1/3 innings pitched.


BRODHEAD 11, EDGERTON 1

EDGERTON — With two homeruns and four RBIs from Mckenna Young, Brodhead improved to 7-0 on the season. Ava Risum picked up the win, scattering four hits over five innings. She struck out 12 and didn’t issue a walk. As a pitching staff, Young and Risum have a 0.15 ERA with a 99-4 strikeout to walk ratio.


MNG 12, WISCONSIN HEIGHTS 7

MONTICELLO — The Ponies scored 11 unanswered runs to win just their sixth game in three years. Molly Olson retired 15 of 17 batters in the last five innings to secure the win. All seven runs were unearned, as MNG committed five errors. At the plate, Melanie Fink went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Earlier in the week, MNG fell to Benton-Shullsburg 12-8. The Ponies scored seven of their runs in two innings. Dalana Trumpy led the offense, going 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, homerun, two RBIs and three runs scored. Tatum O’Bel was charged with the loss, giving up five earned runs in two innings. 


JUDA-ALBANY 15, DEERFIELD 4

DEERFIELD — Gracie Freitag and Myah Johnson combined for eight runs and 10 RBIs in Juda-Albany’s six-inning 10-run rule win on Friday, April 14. The pair also smashed four doubles. Emerson Briggs collected the win, giving up four earned runs in five innings. She scattered nine hits and struck out four.

The performance was a stark contrast to the Panthers’ 5-0 loss to Belmont on Thursday, April 13. Juda-Albany recorded just four hits, including a double from Briliey Swedlund. Avary Briggs suffered the loss, giving up two earned runs on five hits. She was unable to sit a batter down, while walking two.


IOWA-GRANT 4, PECATONICA 3

BLANCHARDVILLE — After scoring one run in the bottom of the seventh, the Vikings left the tying run on second in its loss on Friday, April 14. Chloe Schraepfer led the offense with two hits and a double but was unable to do it all, suffering the loss in the circle. All four runs were unearned, as she struck out eight batters. 

The Vikings dropped another close game on Thursday, April 13 — 8-6 to Highland. Once again, Pecatonica’s comeback effort fell short, despite scoring three runs in the top of the seventh. At leadoff, Trinity Gruenenfelder went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. The Vikings committed eight errors, as Schraepfer once again didn’t allow an earned run in the loss.
