WHITEWATER — The Monroe boys tennis team started the season with a pair of wins at the Whitewater Triangular April 6. The Cheesemakers beat Whitewater 7-0 and DeForest 5-2.
“It was really nice to have a fast start to the season and the guys came out and played well,” said Matt Bordner, Monroe’s coach. “Our varsity team has improved a lot from last year and it’s really exciting to see a good start from the squad. We had a really good first week of practice and the competition has been excellent which I think led to good intensity in our first matches here.”
Freshman Matthew Setterstrom wasted no time getting his first varsity win, defeating Whitewater’s John Chan 6-1, 6-3. Setterstrom lost his No. 1 singles match to DeForest’s Owen Horton in a tiebreaker, 1-6, 7-6(7), 10-5.
“As a freshman, I was pretty impressed with his focus and how well he played,” Bordner said. “His second match got away from him a bit, but I’m confident he will learn a lot from that match and have a really solid first season as our No. 1 singles player.”
Ryan Mathiason went 2-0 on the day at No. 2 singles, as did Wes Saunders at No. 4 singles. Gavin Eckerman, playing No. 3 singles, went 1-1.
Monroe’s doubles teams went 6-0 on the day. Aaron Roidt and Chris Giasson played together at No. 1 doubles, Ethan Towne and Max Petitjean played No. 2 doubles and Dante Giordano and Tim Olson played No. 3 doubles.
“Doubles across the board was pretty smooth sailing. Chris and Aaron will start out as our No. 1 doubles team and I think I liked what I saw so far. They controlled the matches well and their communication looked solid right from the start. No. 2 and No. 3 doubles had similar success and it was awesome to see them take care of business,” Bordner said.
