MADISON - The Monroe boys soccer team left the Madison La Follette triangular with unfinished business.
The Cheesemakers (3-3) went 1-1 on the day, but came a half away from going home unbeaten Saturday. The Cheesemakers defeated DeForest 2-1, then lost their second game to Madison La Follette 3-2. The Cheesemakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Lancers came back to win.
Against La Follette, Monroe junior Andrew Aurit scored a goal on an assist from Kelli Isaj at 22 minutes, 55 seconds. Fellow junior Michael Gross scored off a corner kick to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 first-half lead.
"He (Gross) has been working on corner kicks," Monroe coach Tony Stamm said. "We try to give him that opportunity every time.
"The confidence really grew at that time. We were all feeling we had the game won."
The Lancers received a break when Jarad Frey scored on a penalty kick before the end of the first half.
"That changed the whole flow of the game," Stamm said.
With just 18 minutes between games, the Cheesemakers wore down, giving up two second-half goals.
Madison La Follette's Sam Zipper scored the game-tying goal on an assist from Frey at 37:20.
Zipper scored his second goal, which proved to be the game-winner, on an assist by Frey at 40:30.
"We should have won that game," Stamm said. "Then the exhaustion kind of hit us. We weren't able to push the ball as much."
In the first game, the Cheesemakers capped a comeback against the Norskies with two second-half goals to secure a 2-1 win. Monroe senior Jordan Steiner scored a goal at 36:31 on an assist from Isaj.
Gross got the game-winner on an assist from Isaj at 42:54.
