MONROE - The Monroe High School boys tennis team closed out the regular season by dropping a nonconference match to Walworth Big Foot 5-2 on Thursday.
Monroe senior Silas Setterstrom defeated Jack Heidenreich 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
"This was a great statement victory for Silas at No. 1 singles by really just taking control off the match from the start," Monroe coach Matt Bordner said. "He has had a really nice stretch as of late which creates some nice momentum heading into the conference tournament and subsectionals."
The other win for the Cheesemakers came from senior Nick Baumann, who defeated Big Foot's Nelson Tovar 7-6 (5), 1-6, (10-5) at No. 2 singles.
"Nick Baumann fought hard to earn his fifth win of the year in a match that came down to a 10-point super tiebreaker," Bordner said. "I was really proud of how he responded in the tiebreaker after dropping the second set. Since we have moved Nick up to No. 2 singles, he has really responded well and continues to improve his game even late in the season."
At No. 3 singles, Big Foot's Alexis Duran beat Monroe's Nathan Smith 6-2, 6-0. The Chieftains' Evan Karabas knocked off the Cheesemakers' Quinn Walsh 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
The Chieftains swept all three doubles matches. At No. 1, Big Foot's Logan Grunow and Hamilton Smith defeated Monroe seniors Alex Tordoff and Ryan Peterson 6-4, 6-0. At No. 2, the Chieftains' Beau Cary and Christian Karabas beat Monroe seniors Ross Oxenrider and Jacob Kind 6-4, 6-3. Big Foot's No. 3 doubles team of Gunnar Smith and Jack Grunow defeated the Cheesemakers' Landon Knobel and Scott Navarro 6-0, 6-0.
Monroe will compete in the Badger Conference tournament at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium starting today.
"Our guys are going out there to have some fun and to see if we can earn a few victories," Bordner said.
