MONROE - Winter parking begins at midnight Saturday.
Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley said people must park on even (address number) sides of streets and avenues on even-numbered days and odd sides on odd-numbered days. The ordinance is enforced from midnight to 7 a.m. each day.
Kelley said people should park on the side of the street or avenue that will be in effect after midnight.
"A quick method to determine if you should park on the odd or even side is to look at the house address number and park accordingly," Kelley said.
Citations for violations begin at $20 and increase for multiple offenses, Kelley said.
Nearly all areas in Monroe are covered by the ordinance except for the Square and one block in any direction off the Square.
Kelley said snow route signs indicate which streets need to be cleared of traffic in the event of a snowfall of 2 inches or more.
He also wants to remind people that snow and ice must be removed from sidewalks as soon as possible following a snowfall. It is a violation of city ordinances to shovel, blow, throw or plow snow from private property into the street or onto another person's property.
The parking ordinance continues through March 31.
