'The Trip to Bountiful' play begins March 28

MONROE - Monroe Theatre Guild will present Horton Foote's "The Trip To Bountiful" during late March and early April.

Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 28; Saturday, March 29; Friday, April 4; and Saturday, April 5, as well as 2 p.m. Sunday, March 30 and Sunday, April 6 at Monroe Theatre Guild, 910 16th Ave.

In the play, Mrs. Watts, an aging widow played by Jenny Bochar, wants nothing more in her final days than to return to the home of her youth. Her unhappy life in Houston has trapped her in a cramped apartment with her son Ludie, played by Jeff Severson, and domineering daughter-in-law Jessie Mae, played by Tracy Signer. One day she escapes, and boards a bus that will take her back to Bountiful.

The cast also features Lisa Steiner as Thelma, Jeff Bennett as the Sheriff and Katy Dickson as Mrs. Roy. Travelers are played by Dan Calloway, Abigail Carus and Karen Gempeler. Ticket agents are played by Rick Ivik and Chris Sachs.

Denise Plantenberg and Dave Bristow are directing.

"The Trip to Bountiful" was performed in 2013 as a revival on Broadway with Cicely Tyson, who won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a play. Geraldine Page won an Oscar for Best Actress for the 1985 movie version of "The Trip to Bountiful."

The opening weekend will feature a quilt show by the Courthaus Quilters. An art show by the MTG Homeschool Art class will also be displayed for the duration of the show. The quilts and art will touch on the play's themes of rural life, family and home.

Reserved seating tickets are on sale. Prices for non-MTG members are $15 for adults and $13 for seniors, 60 and older. MTG members receive $2 off. Tickets can be ordered by phone at 608-325-1111, online at www.monroetheatre.com, or at the MTG box office beginning Monday, March 24.
