MONROE - Catherine Kautsky will perform at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, at the Monroe Arts Center in the Gunderson Stiles Concert Hall. A reception for the artist will immediately follow the performance in the Frehner Gallery. Admission is $10 or free to members.
Kautsky will begin the program with pieces from "Fantasiestucke" by Robert Schumann and will end the program with his "Papillons." She will also play "La Columbe" from "Preludes" and "Regard de l'etoile" from "Vingt Regards sur L'Enfant-Jesus" by Olivier Messiaen and "Rain Tree Sketch II" in memoriam of Olivier Messiaen by Toru Takemitsu.
The music critic for the New York Times had this assessment of a Kautsky recital: "A pianist who can play Mozart and Schubert as though their sentiments and habits of speech coincided exactly with hers ... " The same may be said of Kautsky regarding Schumann and others.
Kautsky has performed throughout the United States and abroad as a recitalist, soloist with orchestra, and chamber musician, appearing in venues such as Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Recital Hall in New York, Jordan Hall and Gardner Museum in Boston, the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., and the Chicago Cultural Center.
She is currently a professor at the Music Conservatory at Lawrence University. Prior to her return to Lawrence University, she was Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and chaired its Piano Department.
Kautsky has traveled widely, performing frequently in France and England, and presenting concerts and classes most recently in China, Korea, and South America.
