BRODHEAD - Brodhead police arrested one suspect Thursday and are seeking his accomplice in a rash of thefts out of area vehicles.
Thomas S. Kusch, 23, Madison, was jailed on preliminary charges of bail jumping and illegally possessing a prescription narcotic, according to a release from the Brodhead Police Department.
At about 3:45 a.m. Thursday, Brodhead police were dispatched to the 600 block of 16th Street for a report of a person inside a resident's vehicle. The caller told police that when the home's yard lights turned on, two people ran from the scene, leaving the area in a small, light-colored vehicle.
Police located the vehicle in the 1400 block of 16th Street, but the occupants had fled. Due to the dense fog, police used a thermal-imaging camera to locate the suspects in nearby residential backyards and arrested Kusch after a chase on foot.
The other suspect, Ruslan M. Fedorov, 23, Madison, is still at large. Police believe Fedorov may be driving a gray 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix sedan with the Wisconsin license plate 550VEF. This vehicle was reported stolen from a driveway in the 1200 block West 4th Avenue in Brodhead.
Fedorov is also wanted on a Wisconsin Department of Corrections warrant. Court records show he is on probation for a felony conviction of possessing marijuana with intent to distribute.
Police impounded the abandoned getaway vehicle and found stolen property inside from thefts in Albany, Brodhead, Brooklyn, Johnson Creek, Madison and Oregon.
"We are still compiling a list of property contained within the impounded vehicle," Brodhead Chief of Police Chris Hughes said in the release. He encouraged anyone from the aforementioned areas who have had property stolen from their vehicles to contact their local law enforcement agency, which can in turn contact Brodhead police.
This is the second time in less than a month that Brodhead police have handled cases involving thefts from vehicles. On Jan. 21, Portage police notified Brodhead police that they had arrested Deondrae L. Bell, 28, Madison, on a charge of possessing stolen property, including property stolen in Brodhead from vehicles the previous day.
Brodhead police are still investigating the thefts. Bell apparently also had an accomplice. Anyone with information regarding these thefts is encouraged to call the Brodhead Police Department at 608-897-2112 or anonymously via Green County Crime Stoppers at 800-422-7463.
