Next stages for STAGE facility?

MONROE - The STAGE could become the hottest entertainment spot in downtown Monroe.

"A lot of the Monroe Theatre Guild members are interested in doing improv, comedy and variety nights," Suzanne Miller, scenic and prop designer for the guild, said.

MTG is calling for entertainers, musicians, producers and thinkers of great thoughts to start the process of transforming the former STAGE building at 910 16th Avenue into an intimate 40-seat theater ready for use in January.

The STAGE space also would be used for plays, theatre classes, intimate music concerts and open mic nights.

MTG acquired the resale store building late last year and immediately began production in it for "A Christmas Carol."

"There are some things it would be used for, for Monroe Theatre Guild fund raising. But others might be interested in renting the space, too," Miller said.

With that thought in mind, the community is invited to attend the brainstorming meeting Sunday, Dec. 7, to help visualize the future look and design of STAGE. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m.

Children are not being left behind at STAGE.

Youth who would like to get into theatre arts could get a boost from the formation of the STAGE RIGHT Youth Theatre Company.

"There are so many who try (to get a part in a play), but it's usually the ones with experience that get into shows," Miller said.

Miller said the children who get cut usually are simply not used to auditioning.

A youth company would offer opportunities for children to participate in plays without auditions, while learning.

Classes in not only auditioning, but also theater performing and technical support would be held at STAGE.

Parents, teachers, actors, puppeteers and musicians are especially needed to help get the program started for 2009.

A meeting to discuss potential productions and technical theater opportunities will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at the STAGE building.

MTG also is looking for "business-minded individuals" to provide input on their business plan at a MTG Capital Campaign meeting at 6 p.m., Dec. 10, at STAGE.
