Monroe School Board: April 28, 2008

On Monday, April 28, the Monroe school board:

• Honored John Mulhall, who is leaving the board after 12 years of service. New board members Heidi Zander and Amy Bazley were sworn in and the board elected new officers. Retaining their offices were Scott Schmidt, president; Pam Wyss, vice president; Dr. Mary Franz, clerk; and Larry Eakins, treasurer. Bob Erb was elected deputy clerk to replace John Waelti, who resigned from the board earlier this year. Laurie Genz Prien was appointed CESA 2 delegate.

• Recognized Monroe High School students who last month earned special awards at the Model United Nations at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Jess Weeden, Gail LaVoie and Natasha Morgan received awards of excellence for their position papers. Of the 500 papers submitted, 15 were selected for the award. David Parr received the first MHS Model U.N. Career Recognition award. He was a member for all four years of his high school career, mentored new members and was chosen to deliver one of two opening addresses to the General Assembly for two consecutive years.

• Heard a report from Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy Student Council officers Mitch Keith, Kelly Baumann and Mitch Einbeck. The student council is new this year and already has had a food drive, planned spirit days and will be hosting a talent show.

• Recognized Joe Huber, who received the Congress Bundestag Vocational Scholarship. The scholarship is jointly sponsored by the United States and Germany, and is given to only 25 students each year. Huber will spend a year in an internship in Germany beginning in July. He is the first student from MHS to earn the award.

• Approved retirements for support staff Ella Ellefson, instructional aide/playground supervisor at Parkside Elementary School, and Hollie Pickett, accounting secretary for the District Administrative Center. The board also approved the resignation of Amy Hoppenjan, MHS guidance counselor.

• Hired Bruce Scott as MHS custodian/lawn care and Esther Henry, hearing impaired interpreter. The board also hired Jennifer Beck, emotional behavioral disabilities teacher at Parkside; Andrea Skalmoski, specific learning disability teacher at Parkside; Kelly Murwin, SLD teacher at Northside; Jennifer Sexton, English teacher at Monroe Alternative Charter School; and Sarah Bennett, speech/language therapist at Monroe Middle School. A request by Briana Zajac to transfer from Parkside to take a position teaching art at Northside also was approved.
