MONROE - After roughly three hours of talking to Shane D. Riley, who said he was armed, local police officers were able to arrest him Wednesday on charges of criminal damage to property, criminal trespass to a dwelling and disorderly conduct.

Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley indicated in a press release that officers first responded to a call at 1:23 p.m. about a burglary at a residence in the 1800 block of 8th Street and upon locating Riley, 31, Monroe, in the home, the man ran upstairs to a bedroom, informing police he had a weapon.

As the investigation unfolded, police discovered Riley was related to the homeowner and "had broken into the residence without consent while the homeowner was at work," the release said. Residents in the area were told to remain indoors and away from windows as a safety precaution.

Police obtained information that there were firearms and ammunition in the room Riley had barricaded himself in. Officers proceeded to negotiate with him until Riley surrendered himself to authorities. According to the release, Riley appeared to be under the influence of an intoxicant.

Upon arrest, Riley was taken to the Green County Jail pending a court appearance.
