MONROE - The new gallery exhibit titled "Pots from the Garden" is a collection of functional Majolica pottery by Superior artist Karin Kraemer.

Her vividly colored and detailed designs on pieces, including pots, plates and mugs, will be on exhibit from Friday through Dec. 18 at the Monroe Arts Center, Frehner Gallery, 1315 11th St..

Kraemer's work is primarily Majolica, an in-glaze, hand-painted, tin-glaze technique. Her functional pots and tiles are meant to celebrate the day.

The individual wall pieces and compositions of tiles are hand built and decorated with colorful, loose brushwork. She draws from everyday scenes and objects for imagery. Capturing the color and movement of the moment is her aim: the flowers in her garden trembling in a slight breeze and the sun glowing through them, or the light coming in the window and lighting the room.

Kraemer enjoys working in pottery and tile, because they bring art to the table and everyday use.

Kraemer grew up in Minneapolis. In 1986, she received her BFA in glass-working from St. Cloud State University. After blowing glass in Colorado, Minnesota and Wisconsin, she moved to West Virginia and began to make clay work, pit firing it in her yard.

She moved to Carbondale, Illinois, where she did graduate work in ceramics. She received her MFA in 1996, and moved to Victoria, British Columbia, where she spent two years making pots, gardening and traveling. Duluth, Minnesota, became her home in 1998.

She teaches at local colleges and at her studio, the Duluth Pottery, Superior Division, as well as selling work in galleries and at art fairs. Kraemer makes pots at the Duluth Pottery, Superior Division in the historic old city hall, the Trade and Commerce Marketplace, in Superior, Wisconsin.

She is involved in the public art community in Superior and Duluth by connecting with area organizations and projects.

She is a member of the Duluth Art Institute, founded and was the chair of the North End Arts Council of Superior (now the Superior Council for the Arts) and is a member of the SPACES committee in Superior.

The "Pots from the Garden" opening reception is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in Frehner Gallery. A brief gallery talk by Kraemer begins at 5:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Frehner Gallery exhibits are made possible by MAC Corporate Underwriter: Colony Brands Inc., Season Media Underwriters, Monroe Publishing LLC and Big Radio, with additional support from Michael and Shelley Muranyi, Paul and Sue Barrett, Kevin and Chris Callahan, and Lee and Chris Knuteson.
