CADIZ TOWNSHIP - A Brodhead man was cited for intoxicated operation of an ATV and flown to a Madison hospital following an accident on the Tri-County Trail on Friday, June 7.
Christopher L. Bennett, 26, was also cited for operating an ATV in a careless manner, according to the Green County Sheriff's Department. He was taken by MedFlight to the University of Wisconsin Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Deputies, a Department of Natural Resources warden, the Browntown and South Wayne fire departments and Green County EMS were called at 6:22 p.m. to the Tri-County Trail near Dill Road in Cadiz Township.
Bennett and two other men, Darren R. Blakesley, 44, Machesney Park, and Jeffrey S. Mount, 50, Loves Park, had been operating three ATVs on the trail.
Blakesley and Mount had stopped at a stop sign and then continued eastbound to County MM, where they realized Bennett was not behind them.
Retracing their path, they found Bennett lying in the middle of the trail and his ATV flipped.
Deputies believe Bennett lost control while trying to stop at the stop sign with the other two men. He was ejected. During the crash, his helmet was flung off.
The accident remains under investigation. Alcohol and speed were contributing factors, deputies say.
Bennett was no longer listed as a patient at the UW Hospital as of Sunday afternoon, June 9, according to a hospital representative.
