LANCASTER — A 41-year-old Darlington man was sentenced to six years in prison for two incidents in the Grant County Jail.
Joshua S. Johnson was convicted by a Grant County jury Aug. 4 of two counts of battery by prisoners and one count each of attempted battery by prisoners, battery or threat to a judge, prosecutor or law enforcement officer, and criminal damage to property. All five charges had repeat-offender sentence enhancers.
Circuit Judge Craig Day sentenced Johnson to five years in prison and three years extended supervision after a June 2021 incident in which Johnson hit two correctional officers, with one female officer going to a hospital, according to a Grant County Sheriff’s Office news release.
Johnson also was sentenced to an additional year in jail after a jury convicted him Aug. 4 of lewd and lascivious behavior — exposure and disorderly conduct, both with repeat offender sentence enhancers.
The behavior and disorderly conduct charges were after Johnson exposed himself to correctional officers Jan. 18, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.
Johnson also is charged with battery or threat to a witness and criminal damage to property, both with repeat-offender sentence enhancers. Sheriff Nate Dreckman said Johnson broke a TV and a machine for making video and phone calls from the jail July 16.
Johnson’s preliminary hearing will be Aug. 22. Bond was set at $1,000 cash at his first court appearance July 31.
Johnson was placed on three years probation in lieu of two years prison and two years extended supervision in Lafayette County in 2019 after he pleaded guilty to two counts of battery or threat to a judge, prosecutor or law enforcement officer. Three counts of disorderly conduct and charges of resisting or obstructing an officer, lewd and lascivious behavior in public and misdemeanor bail jumping were dismissed but read in for sentencing, according to court records.
