1957-58 Monticello Boys High School Basketball Team. The roster included: 22-Bill Hefty, 35-John Holdrich, 31-Jim Zweifel, 32-Armin Daubert, 23-Jack Ponyicsanyi, 33-John Hefty, 30-Bill Escher, 34-Steve Boyum, 24-Dick Freitag, 25-Elmer Lemon, and Coach John Ponyicsanyi. This picture was taken in the Monticello High School Gymnasium, now named the Rehmstedt Gym. The large group packing the stage indicates that this was taken during a tournament game since the stage was normally occupied by the Monticello pep band during the regular season. Monticello played (and won) four tournaments at home that year against Juda (91-34 W), New Glarus (94-62 W), Blanchardville (85-66 W) and Cuba City (90-55 W). The opponent in this photo is probably Cuba City. Monticello’s team record that year was 24-2, with two loses in the sectionals; Janesville (50-56 L) and Racine Park in overtime (58-66 L). Jim Zweifel (#31) held the Wisconsin state record for 17 years for the most points scored in a high school career (2,303 points). He was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame for scoring the eighth most all time points in Wisconsin history (2,303).
