Despite national inflation hitting a record, 40-year high the Green County Fair remains a great entertainment bargain, with something for everyone at a reasonable price, organizers say.

The annual event, centered around families and the area’s deep agricultural roots, runs from Wednesday July 20 through Sunday, July 24. It’s theme this year is “barnyard beach party” according Sharlene Swedlund, who is in the role of the current “Fairest of the Fair.”

Of course, the annual Green County Fair will include the usual 4H competitions and vast animal displays; and also a Midway with all of the fair favorite rides and bountiful food options that fair-goers have come to expect every year.

But there’s also plenty of live entertainment. Among those nationally known performers on the bill is Ashley Barron, a Nashville-based country music star who will headline the grandstand on Saturday night.

“We’re really excited to be having live music back at the fair,” said Swedlund. “There’s going to be something for everyone to do.”

Barron’s debut and self-titled debut album was released in 2021 amid the COVID-19 crisis and an unexpected breakup with a man she expected to spent the rest of her life with. One the songs from the record, “Beer in a Bar” climbed all the way to #37 on the Billboard chart, which is a significant accomplishment for a newer artist.  The concert, set for 7:30 p.m. July 23, will also feature singer Dylan Gerrard.

Gerard was a contestant on The Voice television show, season 13, and was a member of “Team Adam” on the program. His blind audition featured the James Arthur song “Say You Won’t Let Go,” turned two judges chairs and helped propel him to nationwide stardom. Daily admission for the fair is just $10 for adults, $5 for kids 8 to 12.

The bandstand shows are included with the price of admission although various upgraded packages are available for most of the major events, including the local tractor pull, the Badger State Pull and demolition derby.

Another new event this year, according to Swedlund, is the addition of bingo in the hospitality tent on Friday. “People are very excited about that,” she said.

Those who enjoy the many rides can also purchase a number of ride packages to keep the fun going all fair long. A “mega pass” can be purchased at the fair office for $60 before July 20 and for $65 after that. All Around Amusements will be providing the rides and a midway experience this year, including the exciting Giant Gondola Wheel ride and popular Moby Dick ride.

Wednesday July 20 is also military appreciation day, with free admission with a military ID.  Educators day include free admission for all educators. And first responders’ day is on Friday, July 22, with first responders showing their ID to get in free.

“The Fair Board has been really working to get new ideas and things to do into the fair, and we hope lots of people come out every day” she said. “We’re really excited about this year’s event.”
