BRODHEAD — A newer community wellness program is inviting older adults to take a simple step toward better health by reducing daily sitting time and increasing light movement.
Stand Up for Your Health (Stand Up) is an evidence-based, four-week workshop designed to help adults age 55+ develop practical strategies to sit less and stand more throughout the day. The program focuses on small, realistic behavior changes rather than structured exercise routines. Research shows participants reduce sitting time by more than one hour per day on average. Reported benefits include improved circulation, increased energy, better physical function, and reduced risk for chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
The interactive workshop meets weekly and helps participants build sustainable habits such as standing during TV commercials, taking short movement breaks, and incorporating more standing activities into daily routines. A follow-up booster session supports long-term success.
The program is intended for adults age 55+ who sit more than six hours per day and can stand independently.
