SOUTH WAYNE - Fresh off of last night's victory over Highland, the Monticello girls basketball team had little time to regroup as they traveled to take on a dangerous Black Hawk team. But the Warriors and coach Mike Flanagan had other plans, as they were able to secure a 58-52 victory.

"You always want to take care of a lead in the game," said Flanagan.

"(But) there were several times where we kind of faltered."

With time winding down in the first half, Monticello senior Marissa Berg hit a halfcourt shot to narrow Black Hawk's lead to two by halftime.

"She (Berg) was able to hit some big shots for their team tonight and keep them in close distance," Flanagan said.

"But we were able to respond when we needed to by making some plays and getting to the free-throw line."

Senior Jen Wellnitz had a big game for the Warriors, netting a game-high 29 points, while teammate Mikayla Sigafus added 12.

For Monticello, Berg capped off her impressive night with 22 points, including four 3-pointers. The Ponies (11-8, 6-5) play Highland this Saturday, Feb. 15.

Brodhead 69, Edgerton 40

EDGERTON - The Brodhead girls basketball team remained perfect on the season with a 69-40 victory over Edgerton in a game that favored the Cardinals early from the start.

Thanks to a 23-5 first quarter advantage, the Cardinals were able to maintain distance from Edgerton as all of Brodhead's players were able to score at least once throughout the game.

Leading the Cardinals were sophomore Kylie Moe with a game-high 21 points and fellow teammate Carly Mohns who added 12 points. Brodhead hosts Evansville on Thursday night.

Argyle 60, Albany 19

ALBANY - Stifling defensive pressure by the Argyle Orioles was key in their 60-19 victory over Albany in a Tuesday night conference matchup.

Argyle was able to apply a solid press early in the game, creating turnovers off of intercepted passes. By halftime the Orioles were able to build a comfortable 31-10 lead.

Junior Jozey Thoman scored a game-high 16 points for the Orioles, who also received 12 points from Jenna Langmeier.

Marley Malkow had six points for the Comets (2-17, 2-8), who travel to travel to Juda on Friday, Feb. 14.

Marshall 65, New Glarus 48

NEW GLARUS - The lady Knights squared off against a tough one-loss Marshall team on Tuesday night and kept things close in the opening half. However, the conference-leading Cardinals were able to capitalize on some miscues by New Glarus, and pulled away with a 65-48 victory.

"I thought our team played very hard in the first half," said Knights coach Megan Scheele. "I think we were able to surprise some people, but they (Marshall) were able to wear us out in the second half."

Throughout the start of the game, the Knights were able to match the Cardinals pace and trailed 28-24 by halftime. But at the start of the third quarter, Marshall was able to rally off five quick points to give them momentum throughout the remainder of the game.

"Marshall came out stronger in the second half, and they were able to score on some of our miscues. We weren't able to execute the things that we needed to in order to stay with them," Scheele said. "But with this loss, I think we have a better understanding of what it takes to finish games, by doing the little things that are necessary for success."

Courtney Feller had a strong performance for the Knights, scoring 18 of her 21 points from three-point range. Also contributing for the Knights was Tamara Elzen with 15 points.

Juda 35, Pecatonica 21

JUDA - The Juda girls defensive effort posed problems for the visiting Pecatonica Vikings, as the Panthers were able to pick up a 35-21 victory on Tuesday night.

In comparing his team's play in their previous games, Panthers coach Curt Brown thought his team's play was substantially better against Pecatonica.

"We played a lot better on the defensive side of the ball tonight," said Brown. "Once we were able to get ahead we did a good job of holding on to it by controlling the tempo. Tonight was a good win to get us back on track."

Conversley, Vikings coach Scott Carlson thought that his team's Tuesday night performance wasn't on par with his team's two previous games.

"We played poorly tonight," said Carlson. "I thought in our two previous games we did a nice job on both ends of the ball. But tonight we tried pushing the pace and it resulted in some turnovers and miscues."

Panthers duo Molly Marass and Chelsea Burkhalter each scored a game-high 10 points.

Mineral Point 52, Darlington 39

MINERAL POINT - Junior Mariah Wiegel scored 13 points in her team's 52-39 loss to Mineral Point on Tuesday night.

Fellow teammates Callie Norton and Taryn Rankin added eight points apiece, but the Redbirds couldn't hit their grove as the host Pointers held the lead throughout most of the game.
