WarBirds grapple to title

ORFORDVILLE - The Black Hawk-Darlington wrestling team for the second straight year won the WIAA Division 3 Parkview regional title and will move on to the sectional as a team.

The WarBirds had nine wrestlers qualify for the WIAA Division 3 Mineral Point individual sectional Saturday. However, Black Hawk-Darlington will wrestle La Crosse Aquinas in a sectional semifinal dual at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Royall High School. The quartet of regional champions for the WarBirds are senior Paul King (120 pounds), junior Kolbe Ubersox (132), senior Grady Rielly (160) and Lief Bredeson (heavyweight). The five wrestlers for the WarBirds who took second are Alexis Cruz (138), sophomore Cayden Milz (145), sophomore Carson Lobdell (170), senior Tyler Mosley (182) and senior Brody Milz (220).

At 120, King (28-7) pinned Marshall's Cai Resler in 2:37 in a semifinal match. In a championship match, he defeated Waterloo's Brandon Springer 16-5. Ubersox (33-2), ranked No. 2 at 132 in Division 3, also breezed to the title. He pinned Parkview's Grant McMahon in 48 seconds in a semifinal match. In the title match, Ubersox pinned Waterloo's Juan Alonso in 2:32.

After a first-round bye, Rielly (24-11) pinned Pecatonica-Argyle's Zander Brunker in 1:13 in a semifinal match. Rielly then pinned Marshall's Jack Moen in 3:44 for the championship. Bredeson (16-15) cruised after a first-round bye at heavyweight. He pinned Pecatonica-Argyle's Owen Thornson in 33 seconds. Bredeson then pinned Marshall's Parker Ellickson in 42 seconds in the title match.

Pecatonica-Argyle had five wrestlers qualify for the individual sectional led by Dakota Doescher (106) and Lucas Gilbertson (195), who were regional champions. After a first-round bye, Doescher pinned Deerfield's Nicholas Wilfong in 2:30. He then pinned Marshall's Kobe Grossman for the championship. Gilbertson (32-8) also cruised after a first-round bye. He pinned Waterloo's Reynol Limon in 1:17 in a semifinal match. Then in the finals, Gilbertson pinned Parkview's Chase Carratt in 2:49.

All five of the WarBirds who finished second went 3-1 on the day. Cruz slipped by Cambridge's Matt Andersen 13-11 in a second-place match. Cayden Milz (145) rolled to an 11-4 win over Cambridge's Aiden Ciha, and Lobdell cruised to a 14-0 win over Marshall's Jakob Lewis.

Mosley (182) edged Pecatonica-Argyle's Prestan Rosenstiel 15-12. Brody Milz, ranked No. 9 in Division 3 at 220, took second based on his pin of Cambridge's Blake Britzke in 1:03 earlier in the regional.

The other sectional qualifiers for Pecatonica-Argyle include Noah Krahenbuhl (113), Eastan Schraepfer (152) and Thornson.
