LA CROSSE - The Monroe wrestling team had three wrestlers medal at the Bi-State Classic Saturday.
The 62-team tournament featured about 58 wrestlers per weight class and some of the top teams in the state. Monroe senior Sam Kind at 170 pounds and Dempzy Foley (182) each finished eighth place in their respective weight classes. Senior Tyson Welsch (heavyweight) took ninth.
"I'm glad and proud for them," Monroe coach Tom Witt said. "Dempzy and Sam were a little disappointed. Their goal was top 6. There is just a wealth of talented kids at each weight class. It's why we go. It's a mini state tournament. The top 16 make it to the second day and that is pretty hard to do."
Kind (20-4) defeated Waunakee's Zachary Marek 5-0 in a wrestleback to assure himself a top-12 medal. Auburndale's Keller Wolfe then pinned Kind in 4 minutes, 53 seconds. In a seventh-place match, Jake Leicht of Bloomington-Kennedy-Jefferson pinned Kind in 3:52.
Foley (21-3) pinned La-Crescent-Hokah's Clayton Jorgenson in 2:02 in a wrestleback to assure himself a medal. Athens' Marshall Westfall then pinned Foley in 2:19. In a seventh-place match, Jose Rodgers-Valdez of South Saint Paul edged Foley 13-9.
Welsch (19-6) went 3-1 to take ninth. He pinned Stratford's Hector Rojas in 2:25. Ithaca-Weston's Carson McCauley then pinned him in 2:08. Welsch bounced back and knocked off Riverdale's Sean Deglow 3-1. In the ninth-place match, Welsch pulled out a 3-0 win over Jesse Jackson of Kenyon-Wanamingo.
Monroe will next wrestle in the Verona Invitational Saturday, where the Cheesemakers will wrestle five dual matches.
"I think we will have two tough matches against Slinger, who is ranked fourth in Division 1, and Watertown which beat Fort Atkinson by about the same score we did. It will be interesting to see how that one goes. We will be wrestling them twice in three weeks."
The Cheesemakers will wrestle a final conference dual against Watertown Jan. 25.
