ALBANY - Albany pulled off a doubleheader sweep of Argyle on Tuesday to earn a Six Rivers East Conference softball co-championship with Barneveld.
"This is beyond believable," Albany coach Connie Wunschel said. "It still hasn't sunk in for me."
In completing a rain-suspended game, Argyle's 5-3 fourth-inning lead quickly vanished. The Orioles walked Megan Schulz and walked in six of the Comets' nine runs in the inning en route to a 16-5 rout.
The Comets (11-3, 10-2 Six Rivers East) won the nightcap, 7-0. Albany senior pitcher Tara Walz pitched two complete games, posting two wins and a shutout. She did it by limiting the Orioles to just four hits.
"She's my workhorse," Wunschel said.
The Comets scored five runs in the fifth inning of the doubleheader with RBI-singles from Clare Koopmans, Jill McNeely and a two-run single by Schulz.
SIX RIVERS EAST
MONTICELLO 3-0, BLACK HAWK 2-8
Black Hawk scored six runs in the first inning of the second game of a doubleheader to sail to an 8-0 shutout of Monticello, thus earning a split.
Black Hawk senior Aryn Wellnitz delivered a clutch two-run triple in the first inning.
Fellow senior Janel Rupnow pitched a complete game, striking out two and walking none to get the win.
Monticello junior Mary Hershberger pitched a complete game to get the win in the first game.
SWAL
FENNIMORE 3-8, DARLINGTON 1-10
Perhaps tired after working 11 innings on the pitching plate, Shawna Foulker sent her Lady Redbirds home happy in a big way Tuesday evening.
After Darlington dropped its first game, 3-1, in a doubleheader in Fennimore, Foulker drilled a walkoff grand slam to right center with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 10-8 victory in the nightcap.
"I told her it was the best possible situation to be in,"Darlington coach Rebecca Norgard said.
The Eagles had just gone to the bullpen. Darlington rallied back from a 7-0 deficit to get its first SWAL victory and improve to 1-13 in the league, tied for last with Fennimore.
