BELLEVILLE - Senior Aimee Sies' powerful left leg has been a major weapon for the Sugar River girls soccer team the past four years. She proved that again in a nonconference showdown against Monroe Tuesday.
Sies scored two goals to lead the Raiders to a 3-0 win over the Cheesemakers. All three of the Raiders' goals in the game came on open kicks - a corner kick, direct kick and penalty kick. Sies broke a scoreless game by scoring on a corner kick she lofted that curved to the far post and into the back of the net at 35 minutes, 30 seconds.
"I was so pumped about this one because it was two in a row and everyone was like do it again just like last night," Sies said. "It's always so cool to score on a corner because you expect it to be an assist and someone else to get some cool finish on it and then you do it and it's really a lot of fun."
Sies was excited to knock off Monroe in a rivalry game.
"It's always great to beat your Green County rival," Sies said. "Any win against Monroe or any team is good especially off to this great start. They are physical and are a good team and we got a good win."
The Raiders (4-0) led 1-0 at the half.
"There is not that much that Reily (Pond) could have done to save that one," Monroe coach Kyle Kasten said of Sies' goal on a corner kick. "That was a phenomenal corner kick that happens once in a blue moon. I have to commend (Sies) for a phenomenal play. She's a very talented player and she showed it tonight. She's dangerous. We know she is dangerous. Hopefully, we can learn from it moving forward."
For more than half the game, the Raiders were clinging to a 1-0 lead. The Raiders scored two goals in the second half to pull out the victory.
"We hang our hat on defense," Sugar River coach John Ziperski said. "I think our girls try to play a certain style. We talked at halftime about trying to get back to our style and playing more of a possession game. We were taken out of our game a little. I think we have to be ready for that. Learning how to endure a little bit more athletic and physical team is important."
Sies scored her second goal on a direct kick at 84:33. Freshman Francesca Schiro added the final goal on a penalty kick at 86:38.
"I thought that the girls battled extremely well," Kasten said of the Cheesemakers. "I was very proud of them for leaving everything out on the field. We had opportunities. The ball didn't bounce our way. That's part a season learning and growing."
It marked the fourth straight shutout for Sugar River junior goalkeeper Rachael Heittola and the Raiders this season. Heittola had two saves.
"It definitely feels good," Heittola said. "It helps when we have an amazing defense. Our offense attacks. Since we have an offense that attacks it takes pressure off the defense and helps us score, get shutouts and wins like tonight."
She was looking forward to the nonconference game against Monroe (3-3).
"In our eyes it's kind of like the Green County battle even though Belleville is partially in Dane County," Heittola said. "New Glarus is all in Green County."
Monroe senior Reily Pond had 12 saves. The Raiders outshot the Cheesemakers 15-2. Sugar River's Emma Anson reinjured her ankle and was forced out of the game.
