Redbirds run past Orioles

ARGYLE - The Darlington girls basketball team took advantage of its opportunities to run in transition as the Redbirds rolled to a 63-39 non-conference win over Argyle Tuesday night.

Darlington (2-0) led just 17-14 after the first quarter. However, the Redbirds opened up the game, outscoring the Orioles 17-7 in the second quarter. The momentum continued in the second half as the Redbirds built a 48-24 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

"They really pressure the ball," Argyle coach Kurt Ritschard said. "They gave us fits. They have three outstanding scorers."

Darlington senior Amy Jorgenson scored a game-high 21 points. Darlington juniors Claire Scott and Cassidy Chambers each scored 17 points.

With the loss, Argyle drops to 1-2. Argyle junior Kayla Ostby scored 15 points to lead the Orioles.

BRODHEAD 71, BELOIT TURNER 26

BELOIT - Brodhead sophomore Carly Mohns scored a game-high 17 points and the Cardinals had four players reach double figures as they crushed Beloit Turner.

Juniors Mariah Ahrens and Taylor Douglas each scored 12 points and Rachel Heller added 11.

Brodhead (3-0) jumped out to a 23-3 first quarter lead and led by 30 points at halftime.

BELMONT 42, MONTICELLO 34

MONTICELLO - The Ponies couldn't battle back from a slow second quarter, losing a non-conference game to the Braves.

Mont-icello led 10-5 after the first quarter, but the Ponies were outscored 14-2 in the second quarter and never recovered.

Monticello's Alyssan Kubly scored a team-high 13 points.

Senior Becky Nelson and sophomore Marissa Berg each added six for the Ponies.
