UWGB opens with big exhibition 94-40 W vs. UWSP

GREEN BAY — The University of Wisconsin Green Bay’s women’s basketball team saw loads of success in the exhibition opener for the 2018-19 season, defeating UW-Stevens Point 94-40 Oct. 24.

The Phoenix opened the game on an 11-0 run and led 24-11 after the first quarter before going on a 31-9 run in the second quarter to put the game away before halftime.

Senior Jen Wellnitz, a Black Hawk High School graduate, scored five points on perfect 2-for-2 shooting, including a 3-pointer for UW-Green Bay. Wellnitz, a redshirt senior, also had two steals, two assists and a rebound in just 13 minutes of action. A preseason all-league pick, Wellnitz is the defending Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year.

Brodhead High School graduate Carly Mohns scored 9 points on 4 of 6 shooting for the Phoenix. Mohns, a senior transfer from Iowa, had a rebound and two assists in 15 minutes of action and hit a 3-pointer.

UW-Green Bay was picked to win the Horizon League for the 11th year in a row in a poll of league coaches. The Phoenix, which has won 20-straight conference titles, hosts UW-Eau Claire in an exhibition Oct. 30 before opening the regular season with a home game Nov. 6 against Northwestern.

UW-Stevens Point freshman Erin Nyhus, a 2018 Brodhead grad and the Cardinals’ all-time leader in points, had a steal and scored eight points with two 3-pointers in her collegiate debut. The Panthers are coached by Shirley Egner, the winningest coach in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history, and are assisted by Diane (Hawkins) Gilbert, a Monroe graduate.

Up next for UW-Stevens Point is the season opener in the UWSP Tip-Off Classic against Dubuque Nov. 16.
