Pecatonica-Argyle's football team led most of the game, but remained winless in stunning fashion Friday, falling 21-20 to River Ridge.
River Ridge capped a 70-yard drive with a 3-yard game-winning touchdown run, followed by an extra-point kick, with just three seconds left in the game. The TD came on a fourth-and-2 play.
Pecatonica-Argyle (0-3) jumped out to a 7-0 lead on junior Charlie Rubio's 50-yard TD run.
Sophomore Jared Johnson scored on a 1-yard plunge to give the Vikings a 14-6 lead in the second quarter.
Rubio, who rushed for 54 yards on four carries, scored his second touchdown on a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter to give the Vikings a 20-14 lead.
"I liked what we did the first half," Pecatonica-Argyle coach Larry Green said. "We just got tired in the second half. We played much better on the defensive side of the ball than we have the last two weeks. We are improving."
Vikings senior quarterback Jeremy Meudt completed 3 of 4 passes for 60 yards. River Ridge limited the Vikings to 55 total rushing yards.
Pecatonica-Argyle will play at Cassville on Friday, Sept. 18.
Belleville-Albany 35, Lake Mills 21
LAKE MILLS - The Wildcats picked up their first win after a pair of tough losses.
Belleville-Albany (1-2), got a 1-yard run by Nick Davis just 28 seconds into the second quarter. A Colton Crye extra-point tied the score at 7-7.
Lake Mills turned right around to score again, but the Wildcats caught up before the half ended. With 1:02 left in the second, sophomore quarterback Collin Adams connected with Danny Nolden for a 32-yard touchdown strike.
Throughout the 2008 season, Belleville-Albany saw itself fade in the second half of many games, and the coaching staff this year has worked tirelessly to make sure there would not be any fading in 2009. On Friday, there wasn't.
In the third quarter, Davis, who rushed for 152 yards on 27 carries, dashed in from 11 yards out to give the Wildcats the lead at the 4:06 mark. Belleville-Albany continued to be aggressive, and a 52-yard run by Donovan Woods just 46 seconds into the fourth gave the Wildcats an insurmountable lead.
Lake Mills scored one last time with 3:19 remaining and was contesting to score one more time. However, Josh O'Connor picked off a pass and returned it 31 yards for the final score of the game with 2:09 left.
Belleville-Albany picked up 11 first downs and 323 yards of offense, while holding Lake Mills to 283 yards and nine first downs. The Wildcats, who forced four turnovers, also committed 11 penalties for 110 yards.
New Glarus-Monticello 35, Watertown Luther Prep 28
WATERTOWN - The Glarner Knights picked up 236 rushing yards and forced three turnovers on defense to pick up a big Capitol Conference win.
New Glarus-Monticello (3-0), scored three straight touchdowns to open the game. Ryan Bright scored 3 minutes, 51 seconds into the game on a 1-yard run. Michael Elzen scored on a 4-yard touchdown run with 2:31 left in the first and another 4-yard run with 10:48 in the second quarter.
Luther Prep picked up its first points with 7:27 to go in the second, but the Knights struck back just 17 seconds later. Cameron Jeglum scored on a 75-yard TD pass from Bright. One final Luther Prep score made it 27-14 at halftime.
In the second half, the two teams continued to slug it out. Tyler Dorn's 1-yard score with 5:27 remaining in the game put New Glarus-Monticello up for good.
Three Knights finished the game with more than 50 yards rushing. Kirbe French had 56 yards on four carries, Bright had 52 yards on 11 carries and Elzen finished with 50 yards on nine rushes. Bright also threw for 120 yards.
Benton-Scales Mound 22, Black Hawk 22
SOUTH WAYNE - Turnovers plagued the Warriors. Black Hawk (1-2) committed five miscues and Benton rolled to a 22-0 halftime lead.
The Warriors got on the board in the third quarter on sophomore Jace Johnsrud's 61-yard TD run.
Black Hawk's Michael Wolff was 8 of 18 passing for 78 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Wolff threw a 4-yard TD pass to Cody Foster for the Warriors' other score.
Foster rushed for 120 yards on 18 carries.
