BIG FOOT - Two singles players and one doubles team for the Monroe boys tennis team turned in solid performances Tuesday at the Big Foot-Williams Bay subsectional to qualify for the Jefferson sectional.

The sectional qualifiers for the Cheesemakers include Monroe senior David Shon at No. 1 singles, sophomore Silas Setterstrom at No. 2 singles and the Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles team of seniors Kevin Noriega and Matt Monahan.

Setterstrom went 2-0 Tuesday. He defeated Edgerton's Dustin Lemke 6-1, 6-1. Setterstrom then beat Jefferson's Spencer O'Brien 6-3, 7-5. With the win, Setterstrom avenged an earlier season loss to O'Brien. Setterstrom jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set and cruised. He trailed 5-3 in the second set before fighting off four set points to trim the deficit to 5-4. Setterstrom took over and won 12 of the final 15 points to close out the match.

"We talk a lot about how you need to get your first big win to learn how to win a close match," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said of Setterstrom. "This was Silas' first big win and hopefully it'll be followed by many more."

After Tuesday's subsectional, Madison Edgewood with 24 points is in first place. McFarland is in second place (20), Big Foot third (10) and Monroe fourth (8).

Shon at No. 1 singles defeated Edgerton's Mike Tate 6-1, 6-1. Noriega and Monahan at No. 1 doubles beat Edgerton's David Gonzalez and Patrick Lehner 6-2, 6-1.

"David Shon at No. 1 singles and Matt Monahan and Kevin Noriega did what they needed to do and took care of business," Saugstad said.

Shon at the Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles team will both play the No. 3 seed from the other subsectional today. If they win their first match, both Shon and the No. 1 doubles team will qualify for state.

"The first match at sectionals for No. 1 singles and doubles players is a really stressful match where nerves can really impact the results," Saugstad said. "I'm hoping David, Matt and Kevin can treat it like any other match and come through with a strong showing."

Whitewater's Mitchell Dalzin at No. 3 singles defeated Monroe senior Zach Hendrickson 6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-3. At No. 4 singles, Big Foot's Liam McCarthy defeated Monroe senior Rhett Katzenberger in three sets 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.

McFarland's No. 2 doubles team of Will Bacon and Michael Medenblik beat Monroe's Jeremy Miller and Kody Althaus 6-2, 6-1. The Spartans' No. 3 doubles team beat the Cheesemakers' team of Keyton Friske and Cole Oudinot 6-1, 6-0.
