MONROE - Softball coach Dale Buvid wants Monroe to use the final five games as preparation for the regional tournament.
Monroe got off to a great start, pounding out 14 hits to beat DeForest 7-1 in a Badger Challenge game Thursday at Twining park. The Badger Challenge game pitched the top team from the Badger South, Monroe, against the top team from the North, the Norskies.
"We are excited with how we played," Buvid said. "The 14 hits might be a season-high. We beat a very good team. It was a game fitting of a 1 vs. a 1. It was a well-played game by both teams."
Monroe freshman Alysha Witt went 3-for-3 with one RBI. Cassidy Pivonka went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI. Junior Kylea Ambrose went 2-for-3 with a two-run double and senior Kari Jordan was 2-for-3. The Cheesemakers tacked on two more runs in the sixth.
Monroe (14-6, 9-2 Badger South) broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning. Monroe junior Natalie Dillon pitched a complete game and gave up just one earned run on four hits. She struck out six and didn't issue a walk.
"She (Dillon) pitched well against a really good hitting team," Buvid said. "She's trending up like our team."
Monroe will play Delavan-Darien, ranked No. 9 in the Division 2 Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association state poll, 4:30 p.m. today at Twining Park. The Cheesemakers will then play Kenosha Tremper at about 8 p.m.
