MONONA - One day after committing six errors in a loss to Stoughton, the Monroe High School softball team was flawless in the field and pulled out a 5-2 win over Monona Grove on Tuesday.
"It certainly was a big improvement defensively," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said of his Cheesemakers' team which has averaged less than two errors a game this season. "It was a solid win and our two pitchers threw well."
Junior Lexi Hilliard went 3-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Cheesemakers.
Monroe, at 16-7 overall, finishes the Badger South season at 8-4 and in third place. Stoughton (11-1) won the conference title and Fort Atkinson (9-3) was second..
Monroe senior Natalie Dillon pitched four innings and limited the Silver Eagles to one run. Dillon struck out six and walked two. Junior Carly Upmann pitched three innings and gave up one run on one hit. Upmann struck out one and walked one.
Clinging to a 3-1 lead with two outs in the third inning, the Cheesemakers broke the game open. Monroe senior Cassidy Pivonka reached on an error and sophomore Alysha Witt singled. The big blow came on Hilliard's two-run single to extend the Cheesemak-ers' lead to 5-1.
"That was the one that put us in a good position and really good shape," Buvid said.
Monroe will play at Baraboo on Thursday in a nonconference game.
