MONROE - After the Monroe boys soccer team gave up 10 goals to Delavan-Darien in a season-opening loss Thursday, coach Tony Vasquez on Saturday made a switch on defense to a 3-2-3-2 alignment that gave the Cheesemakers one extra midfielder back against Jefferson.

The defensive adjustment paid off as Monroe beat Jefferson 3-0 in a lightning-shortened game that was called after 73 minutes at Honey Creek Park Saturday. The championship game of the quad was canceled due to the storm after teams waited about 30 minutes for the storm to stop.

"It (the defensive alignment) helped slow their offensive attack," Vasquez said of Jefferson. "There were less one-on-one opportunities for their forwards. Jefferson has been an up and coming team the last couple of years. It's a big win. They are usually in our bracket for the playoffs."

Monroe sophomore Ryne Miller gave the Cheesemakers a 1-0 lead, scoring a goal at 21 minutes, 33 seconds. Monroe senior Kevin Noriega scored a goal on an assist from Miller at 37:14 to give the Cheesemakers a 2-0 lead at the half.

"We were more patient and seemed more confident," Vasquez said of Saturday's game. "The guys knew we could have played better against Delavan-Darien. Delavan-Darien is a good team, but they should not have scored that many goals."

Monroe senior Matt Coplien scored the lone second-half goal on an assist from junior McKenzy Foley to give the Cheesemakers an insurmountable 3-0 lead.

Monroe senior Austin Murphy had eight saves to earn the shutout. The Cheesemakers will have a busy week with three games. Monroe plays at DeForest Tuesday and then hosts Platteville Friday and plays at Dodgeville Saturday.
