DELAVAN - After winning the Whitewater triangular one day before, the Monroe boys tennis team was short-handed and went 1-2 in the Delavan-Darien Quad Saturday.

Monroe defeated DeForest 5-2 and lost close match to Delavan-Darien 4-3 and lost to Big Foot 6-1.

"We were missing a number of our varsity guys, which gave a nice opportunity for some of our JV guys to get some varsity looks," Monroe coach Matt Bordner said. "Some of our guys that normally play doubles were able to get some looks at singles and vice versa. It also gave us a chance to see what type of talent Delavan-Darien and Big Foot have, as we will see a number of this players again in subsectionals."

Monroe is 4-3 overall in duals and 1-1 in the Badger South Conference.

Monroe's Bo Bahler went 2-1 at No. 2 singles. In the match against DeForest, Bahler defeated Eliot Pickhardt in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 10-7. Freshman teammate Christopher Andraski, at No. 3 singles, beat the Norskies' Brady Feist 7-5, 7-5.

The Cheesemakers swept all three doubles matches against the Norskies. At No. 1 doubles, Monroe juniors Nick Schumacher and Evan Thompson defeated DeForest's Nathan Xiong and Josh Dichoso 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, the Cheesemakers' Nick Quinn and David Keegan beat Dominic Caracci and Nolan McCann 6-0, 6-2. Luke Quinn and Wade Sweeney defeated DeForest's Bryce Erdman and Will Simon 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.

The only match the Cheesemakers won against Big Foot came from Spencer Adamo at No. 2 singles over the John McHugh 6-2, 6-0.

Monroe won three of the four singles matches in the loss to Delavan-Darien.

Bahler beat Delavan-Darien's Ian Bullock 7-6 (2), 6-2 at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles, Andraski beat Jody Perez 6-0, 6-1 and at No. 4 singles Thompson defeated Delavan-Darien's Martin Bautista 6-2, 6-1.

"We have some important matches this week as we face three conference teams as well as Jefferson who is in our subsectional," Bordner said.

On Friday, Monroe won the Whitewater triangular. The Cheesemakers knocked off Whitewater 5-2 and rolled by DeForest 5-2. The Cheesemakers won all six doubles matches.

"As a team we played much better," Bordner said. "Our serves were better and our guys played with a lot more energy and tenacity."

Schumacher and Thompson, at No. 1 doubles for the Cheesemakers, defeated the Norskies' Xiong and Dichoso 6-2, 6-2. Schumacher and Thompson then knocked off Whitewater's Colin Chenoweth and Austin Kaja in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 10-6.

"I was proud of all of our doubles teams," Bordner said. "Evan and Nick did a great job at the net in their matches and showed some tremendous effort and hustle plays that added up to be the difference for them."

Keegan and Nick Quinn, at No. 2 doubles, beat McCann and Caracci 6-0, 6-2 and slipped by Whitewater's Henry Bresser and Anthony Reed 7-5, 6-3.

Keegan and Quinn trailed in the first set against the Whippets, but came back to win.

"David and Nick were steady in both of their matches," he said. "David had some great shots at the net and Nick continues to improve with his groundstrokes and volleys at the net."

At No. 3 doubles, Monroe's Luke Quinn and Sweeney cruised past Simon and Erdman 6-2, 6-1. Then the Cheesemakers' Quinn Schultz and Landon Knoebl, at No. 3 doubles, escaped Whitewater's Broderick Frye and Zach Brantmeier 7-6, 6-7 (5) and 19-17.

Bahler, at No. 2 singles, also went 2-0. He edged DeForest's Eliot Pickhardt in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 10-7 and later defeated Whiteweater's Joseph Creanza 6-1, 6-1.

"Bo Bahler had a great night picking up two victories and was able to control the ball on a lot of his shots," Bordner said. "As the matches went on he gained confidence and started piecing together really strong points."

Monroe has a busy week with four matches this week including three conference duals. The first one is the Cheesemakers hosting Watertown today.

"As much as it would be great to have a few more days of practice to work on things, I know the guys are looking forward to the competition we will face this week," Bordner said.
