MONROE - There isn't much of an offseason for Monroe softball players following the WIAA Division 2 state tournament.
The Monroe Red softball team's bats came alive in a 15-2 win over Juda in summer league play on Sunday.
With Juda's Amber Ramos pitching on a traveling softball team in a tournament in Baraboo, Monroe didn't waste any time jumping on Juda starting pitcher Tabitha Davis.
Monroe's Ellie Grossen doubled to left in the first inning. Chandra McGuire then crushed an RBI double off the fence in left to tie the game at 1. Monroe scored three runs in the second and four in both the fourth and fifth.
"It would have been nice to go against her," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said of Ramos. "Davis is a good pitcher too. We put some hurt on her. It's encouraging. We talked as a team about having a little bit better plate discipline."
The Monroe Red team had six players with multi-hit games including Kasey Gutzmer (2 for 2), Grossen (2 for 2), McGuire (2 for 3), Alyssa Montgomery (2 for 3), Heather Barta (2 for 3) and Breawne Ambrose (2 for 3).
Monroe's Becca Armstrong pitched five innings and gave up just one earned run. She struck out three and walked one.
There are several defensive positions that will be available after the graduation of shortstop Kelsey Erickson, third baseman Kristin McArdle and catcher Kaylee Craigo.
"We are trying some things for next year and looking at some people in different positions," Buvid said.
Monroe is looking to develop a No. 2 pitcher to have on the varsity next year behind Armstrong.
"We have to find a second pitcher," Buvid said.
Monroe has four other pitchers who have not given up a run in White league games this summer. Monroe has been using Corey Wells, Samantha Hose and Sam Solberg in White league games and they have been stellar so far.
"We have a lot of kids who can throw strikes."
Monroe also shuffled its lineup and hit McGuire in the No. 3 spot in the lineup after she led off all season during the spring.
"McGuire has some power and we put her in more of a run producing spot in the lineup," Buvid said.
