MONONA - With the field still soggy and muddy from Tuesday's rains, the postponed boys soccer matchup between Monona Grove and Monroe made for a sloppy affair Thursday.
Monona Grove used two first-half goals to hold off the Cheesemakers 2-1 in a Badger South conference game.
"We had real trouble getting out grip on the field in the first half," Monroe head coach Tony Stamm said. "They played football on (the field) last night and really tore up the middle of the field on the crown. By halftime, we figured out our adjustments with the passing game and controlling the ball."
The Silver Eagles scored at the 17:34 mark in the first half on a goal by Sabastian Xiong. Just 17 minutes later, Eli Snyder gave the Silver Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Jon Elmer put one into the net for the Cheesemakers at the 60:37 mark of the second half, but the damage was already done.
With about 1:30 left to play, Stamm pulled Danny Becker out from the goal in an attempt to tie the score. Deep in Monona Grove territory, the Silver Eagles regained possession and dumped a ball over the heads of Monroe's defenders. With an open shot at the net, an MG player just tried to put enough English on the ball to seal the win. Becker, taking lessons from Usain Bolt, sprinted back to the goal out of nowhere and pushed the ball out of harm's way with a foot to spare.
Becker finished the game with 14 saves.
