OREGON - The Monroe boys tennis team lost a dual match to Oregon 5-2 on Tuesday, but received some solid doubles play.
"We knew the match would be close," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "We had our chances as a team, but in the end we just didn't come through with the big shots."
The two wins for the Cheesemakers came at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Cristian Noriega and Kevin Kohlstedt defeated Oregon's Alex Nasserjah and Nick Hepner 7-6 (2), 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, Bob Seichter and Josh Riese defeated Oregon's Brady Behrend and Kyle Wood 6-1, 6-0.
"Cristian and Kevin played with confidence tonight and played a good match," Saugstad said. "The No. 2 doubles came through with another dominating performance. The key for them recently has been playing with energy and taking over the net."
The Panthers swept all four singles matches from the Cheesemakers.
Jackson Schneider at No. 1 singles defeated Monroe junior Taylor Soddy 6-3, 7-5.
"Singles was a struggle tonight," Saugstad said. "Soddy gave it everything he had, but ran out of gas in the end."
At No. 2 singles, Alec Onesti defeated Monroe freshman Kevin Noriega 6-0, 6-0. Brian Johnson at No. 3 singles defeated Monroe freshman Eric Bush 6-2, 6-3. At No. 4 singles, Oregon's Dakota Tollakson defeated freshman Matt Monahan 6-3, 6-1.
Oregon's No. 3 doubles team of Adam Bessemmer and Dan Griffith defeated Luke Andraski and Jeremy Miller 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2).
"No. 3 doubles lost a heartbreaker tonight," Saugstad said. "It was just a back and forth match the whole night and Oregon came up just a little bigger in the tiebreaker. Close losses like this make you hurt, but these are the types of matches that make you better."
