MIDDLETON - The Monroe boys track team won four relay races and finished third overall with 117 points at the Cardinal Relays Friday.

Middleton captured the team title in the Cardinal Relays 144-137 over runner-up Oak Creek. The Cheesemakers medaled in 12 of the 20 events. The Monroe girls track team finished fourth.

The boys had a very nice showing at this meet," Monroe boys track coach Scott Mosher said. "It's a relay style with a lot of events, 20, that each require a relay team so it can be tougher for the smaller teams to field a competitive team."

The Cheesemakers' 400-meter relay team of Sam Kind, Anthony Hernandez, Jevon Gibson and Jordan Montgomery won with a time of 44.19 seconds. It marked the third fastest 400 relay time in the history of Monroe's program.

"This a fantastic time for this being only the first time this four ran together," Mosher said.

Monroe's 3,200 relay team of sophomores Jake Bower and Dylan Fahrney, and seniors Jake Meier and Jonah Tostrud finished first with a time of 8 minutes, 43.12 seconds, which was about seven seconds faster than runner-up Middleton.

Fahrney and Brower teamed with freshman Austin Zettle and sophomore Jack Garthwaite to help the Cheesemakers to a win in the freshmen-sophomore sprint medley relay (4:01.67).

"This was a very exciting race and we enjoyed seeing the freshmen compete hard and win this one," Mosher said.

The Cheesemakers' 400 throwers relay team of junior Ethan Kleckler, sophomore Julian Gruber, freshman Caleb Bunker and junior Jacob Setterstrom won their race (50.62).

"Throwers don't get a chance to run very often so this group was very excited to show what they were made of, and they completely dominated the competition," Mosher said.

Monroe freshman Trevor Rodebaugh finished second in the 110 hurdles 16.87 seconds). Montgomery teamed with Kind, senior Jason Koller and Tostrud to take second in the 1,600 relay (3:28.92), which was 0.11 seconds behind Madison Memorial.

"These guys love to compete and could really do some damage in this event," Mosher said.

Monroe senior Tyson Welch took second in the shot put (44 feet, 10 ½ inches) and senior Brayden Zettle placed third in the long jump (20 feet, 1 ½ inches).

In the girls relays, Monroe won four events. Monroe sophomore Cassi Gersbach had a hand in winning three individual relay events including the 100 hurdles (16.56), 300 hurdles (48.94) and long jump (15-11).

Middleton won the relay title 139-136.5 over Oak Creek. Madison Memorial took third (136) ahead of Monroe (104).

"To be able to hang with elite division one programs scoring 104 points and taking fourth was quite an accomplishment," Monroe girls track coach Eric Jubeck said. "Finishing behind Big 8 powerhouses Middleton and Madison Memorial and Southeastern conference's best track and field program."

"Our sprint relays looked really sharp, especially the 4x1, field event 4x1, throwers 4x1, 4x2 and sprint medley," Jubeck said. "Those four relays came away with 38 points."

The throwers 400 relay team of sophomore Grace Saunders, senior Sydney Mathiason, sophomore Chloe Bunker and junior Cammi Ganshert finished first (55.43). The Cheesemakers' 400 field event relay team of freshman Abby Price, Gersbach, junior Faith Koester and freshman Megan Benzschawel took second (53.42).

Ganshert teamed with sophomore Jada Love, Koester and junior Emma Sanders to take second in the 800 sprint medley relay (1:56.92). Bunker took third in the shot put (38-8 ¾).
