MONROE - The Monroe boys hockey co-op was in the driver's seat to post its second straight win.

Monroe jumped out to a three goal lead, but penalties came back to haunt the Avalanche. Monroe (1-1, 0-1 Badger South Conference) committed 12 penalties and McFarland scored six unanswered goals to stun the Avalanche 6-3 Tuesday at SLICE. Five of McFarland's goals came when the Avalanche were playing short-handed.

"We lost because of the penalties," Monroe coach Nathan Brown said. "That is all there is to it. A team our size can't be out there playing (short-handed) that long. We don't have the legs to be out there playing that long."

Avalanche senior goalie Ethan Studer had 22 saves.

"He (Studer) played an incredible game," Brown said. "When you only have three guys out there to help it's hard to stop the puck."

Monroe senior Jake Trickel scored a goal on an assist from Matt Hodgson with 7 minutes, 43 seconds left in the first period. Hodgson then scored a goal on a pass from Trickel at 16:22 in the second period to give the Avalanche a 2-0 lead. Gus Werhane of Lena-Winslow scored a goal at 13:49 in the second period on an assist from Tyler Johnson to extend the Avalanche's lead to 3-0.

"I thought we had to play hard until the end of the game," Brown said of the Avalanche's early 3-0 lead.

Monroe will host Madison Edgewood Friday, Dec. 13. Edgewood (2-2) is ranked No. 9 in the Wisconsin Prep Hockey poll.

The Avalanche will play at McFarland Tuesday, Feb. 4.

"We will for sure not get that many penalties when we play them again," Brown said.
