WESTBY - Darlington's Devin Malott is returning to the WIAA Division 3 state tournament.
Malott (38-2 overall), finished 3-0 at the Westby Sectional Saturday to earn his way to Madison in the 119-pound weight class.
In the first round, Malott pinned Deerfield's Pat Tolme in 2 minutes, 20 seconds. In the semifinals, Malott won a major decision, 13-4, over Kickapoo-LaFarge's Chris Townsend. A 9-2 decision over Mineral Point's Garrett Smart gave Malott the sectional title.
Teammate Mark Brugger (33-10), was not so fortunate. After getting pinned in the semifinals by Brookwood's Rance Nofsinger, Brugger needed to fight his way back into heavyweight contention. A pin over Deerfield's Walker Jaroch in the consolation semifinals kept the dream alive, but De Soto's Frank Ames pinned Brugger in 5:47 to keep the Cardinals' big man out of the state picture.
At 189 pounds, Darlington's Tanner Andrews lost in his quarterfinals match to Deerfield's Jamie Cunningham, 12-8, ending his bid for state.
Both Cody James (112 pounds) and Ross Gilberston (heavyweight) worked their way into the consolation semifinals. James lost to Iowa-Grant's Logan Mills via pin and Gilbertson was pinned by Ames in 44 seconds.
Black Hawk's four wrestlers, Isaac Sigafus (125), Kory Costa (135), Kyle Stauffacher (145) and Bryant Luhman (171) finished 0-6 at sectionals.
