BLANCHARDVILLE — After winning just one game a season ago with an extremely young and inexperienced team, the Vikings are looking at taking the next step.

“Last year was a losing season for the Lady Vikings, and this year our goal is to be competitive in every game and concentrate on improving our defense,” said head coach Linda Hendrickson, who takes over for Justin Rose. “We have some sophomore and freshmen guards who should help with scoring and being able to handle ball pressure.”

Seven varsity players return from a year ago, which includes five seniors and three sophomores. Freshmen Tessa Green, Niveah Gross and Lexi Peterson will likely see playing time as newcomers.

“Tessa is a point guard and has the ability to score from the outside and can handle the ball against pressure. Niveah is a strong defender and outside shooter, and Lexi has the ability to rebound and go after the loose ball,” Hendrickson said.

The Vikings will need as much scoring as possible, and Hendrickson said she is looking for a couple of players to consistently be successful scoring options.

“We also have inexperienced players who will need to grow up fast playing varsity-level basketball. Depending on how long it takes them to adjust will determine our season,” Hendrickson said.
