WIAA releases playoff brackets

MONROE — Two area schools received No. 1 seeds in the upcoming WIAA Girls Basketball Tournament. Brodhead (Division 4) and Albany (D5) are both ranked in their division, challenging for conference championships, and recently named the No. 1 team in their subsectional, the WIAA released Feb. 13.


Division 2

Monroe (1-20) has struggled this regular season, and now are faced with 6-seed Oregon (13-10) in the opening round of the tournament Feb. 22. Should the 11th-seeded Cheesemakers pull off the upset, they would get No. 3-seed DeForest (13-10) in the second round.


Division 4

Brodhead (20-2) is guaranteed a share of the Rock Valley title already. In the tournament, the Cardinals received a first-round bye and on Feb. 25 will host the winner of Waterloo (8-13) and Markesan (13-10).

Down bracket, Belleville (17-4) is the No. 2 seed and received a bye. The Wildcats will host either Deerfield (15-7) or Poynette (7-14) in the second round. New Glarus (15-7) dropped to the fifth-seed in the high-powered regional. The Knights host Wisconsin Heights (5-18) in the opening round Feb. 22, with the winner facing 4-seed Cambridge (14-7). Brodhead and New Glarus potentially could match up in the regional final Feb. 26. Earlier this season, Brodhead won a head-to-head matchup with the Knights on Jan. 17, 51-36.

Across the sectional, Darlington (14-9) was 8-seed and will host Melrose-Mindoro (11-12) in the opener, with SWAL champion and the top-ranked team Mineral Point (23-0) up next.


Division 5

Albany (19-4) received the No. 1 seed in its subsectional and will host the winner of No. 8 Johnson Creek (11-12) and No. 9 Pecatonica (11-11). Earlier this season Pecatonica defeated the Blue Jays at Johnson Creek 52-42. Meanwhile, Albany defeated Pecatonica both times the teams have played this year by a total of 53 points. Albany defeated Johnson Creek by 30 points on Feb. 1.

Down bracket, Black Hawk (16-5) received the No. 2 seed and will host 15-seed Juda (4-18) in the playoff opener. The winner will take on the winner of the Monticello (7-12) vs. Burlington Catholic Central (12-10) matchup, slated to be in Burlington. Argyle (11-10) is the 6-seed and hosts Madison Abundant Life Christian-St. Ambrose (1-21) in the first round, with either Madison Country Day (5-16) or 3-seed Fall River (13-10) in Round 2.
