PATCH GROVE — Due to ongoing concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic, the Six Rivers Conference canceled its fifth annual East vs. West All-Star Volleyball Showdown.
The games were originally scheduled to be held at River Ridge High School in June, and then were rescheduled for July 29 after Wisconsin governor Tony Evers shut down access to all school districts for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year in April.
The Six Rivers Conference had hoped the games could still be held in July, however ongoing issues due to the pandemic forced the league to make the tough decision to cancel the event.
The two teams were made up of senior all-conference selections from the East Division and West Division squaring off in a final five-set match to end their prep careers.
Black Hawk head coach Rachel Wolff, Monticello head coach Rebecca Gustafson and Argyle head coach Jen Butler-Green were set to guide the East All-Star squad against West All-Stars led by River Ridge head coach Dianne Langmeier and Highland head coach Maria Wineski.
Black Hawk’s Hannah Butler, Maddy Huschitt and Kristen Knapp were scheduled to lead the East All-Stars along with Argyle’s Claudia Miller; Pecatonica’s Valerie Carr; Monticello’s Miah Brokopp; Juda’s Montana Steinmann, Taylor Golackson and Triniti Elmer; Albany’s Cindy Detra; and Barneveld’s Kaylene Doescher.
Belmont’s Lizzy Haag and Caitlyn Cushman were set to join Shullsburg’s Reva Spillane and Calli Jerry on the West All-Star team along with Benton’s Alexis Redfearn and Sarah Fluhr; River Ridge’s Skylar White, Jaci Williams, Faith Schier and Rylee Zinkle; Potosi’s Justice Udelhofen and Chloe Groom; Cassville’s Lydia Reynolds; and Highland’s Grace Pustina and Megan Mueller.
The West rolled over the East, 4-1, in last year’s senior showcase to gain a 3-1 edge in the all-time series.
All proceeds from the free-will admission and other fund-raising efforts during the showcases go directly to the Madison Children’s Hospital in support of their events. Coaches, game personnel, referees and other participants donate their time to the event.
In the five-year history of the All-Star event, the Six Rivers Conference has donated over $3,000 to the Children’s Hospital.
