SHULLSBURG — On the road in a WIAA Division 5 regional semifinal game on Oct. 24, 5-seed Monticello looked to upset host 4-seed Shullsburg. The Ponies took the first two sets 25-22, 25-18 before dropping the final three 25-23, 25-18, 16-14.

Monticello wasn’t the only local team ousted in its regional semifinal game. In another Division 5 game, Six Rivers East Conference champion, top-seeded Barneveld, swept league opponent 9-seeded Black Hawk  25-6, 25-17, 25-9. In Division 3 Section 2, 8-seed Darlington took one set from top-ranked Aquinas. The Redbirds ultimately fell 25-20, 25-10, 19-25, 25-15. In Section 4, 9-seed New Glarus fell to 1-seed Abundant Life-Saint Ambrose 25-17, 25-9, 25-17.
