DARLINGTON — The Redbirds opened the baseball season with a nonconference win against Argyle March 29, 13-6.

The Orioles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but Darlington scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to flip the script. In the fourth, Darlington put up six runs to take a commanding lead.

Argyle wasn’t out just yet, and scored five runs in the top of the sixth to bring it back to just a two-run deficit at 8-6. However, the Redbirds scored five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning and closed it out in the seventh.

Braden Davis had two runs and two hits for Darlington, with teammates Gage Banfield and Cadyn Burbach each doubling. Thomas Nelson had a double and a single for Argyle, with Mason McNett adding two hits from the leadoff spot.

Buddy Gerber pitched 3.1 innings for Argyle, allowing four hits and four walks. Six of the eight runs against him were earned. Brady Penniston didn’t allow a run in five outs, while Max Godfrey gave up five runs — one earned — in the sixth before striking out the side.

Darlington used five pitchers in the outing. The Redbirds also stole 12 bases and took advantage of nine Orioles errors.
