DARLINGTON — The Redbirds won just one game a year ago and graduated three starters.

Returning are four seniors, three juniors and a sophomore that saw plenty of time on the mound in 2021. Catcher Greta Volkening was a first-team all-conference selection as a junior, and will play at UW-Platteville in 2023. This spring, she’ll be joined in the dugout by fellow seniors Josie Thomas, Brenna Grossen and Mila Gille. Juniors Cayla Golackson, Ashlynn Norgard and Jaylyn Schwartz, and sophomore Sophie Wiegel will also be in the lineup.

“The goal is to be competitive every single game, and gain confidence as the season progresses,” said Molly Rice, now in her fifth year coaching the Redbirds. “Our team’s biggest strength is returning some very key players in both the infield and outfield.”

The SWAL is typically a very tough conference to play in, and this season will be no different.

“The SWAL is one of the strongest conferences around. Therefore, several teams will be competing for the top spot,” Rice said. “Our biggest challenge is learning how to win games. With the returning experience and senior leadership, I hope we can overcome this challenge.”

Darlington opens the season March 29 at Monticello-New Glarus, with the home opening April 2, when the Redbirds will host a tournament at Sieg Field. Monticello-New Glarus, River Ridge and Shullsburg-Benton will be participating. Tournament games will begin at 10 a.m. and last most of the day.
