PRAIRIE DU CHIEN — Darlington junior Josie Thomas qualified for sectionals in girls golf after carding a 38-over-par 110 at the WIAA Division 2 regional at Prairie du Chien Country Club Sept. 30.
Thomas parred two holes on the day — the par 4 first hole and the par 4 13th. She finished two strokes ahead of teammate Brianna Gavinski, a senior. Gavinski parred the second and 13th holes and finished 19th overall.
Sophie Wiegel, a Darlington freshman, shot a 113, just one stroke behind Gavinski, taking 20th overall and three shots back from advancing. Josie Meister, another freshman, carded a 115 for Darlington, while senior Payton Gratz finished with a 127.
The Redbirds team score of 450 was a 3-stroke improvement from their Sept. 23 conference meet score on the same course. Thomas, Meister and Wiegel all dropped their scores by six strokes or more from a week earlier. Wiegel improved by 16 strokes.
Darlington finished fifth out of the seven teams at the regional. Edgewood won the team title with a 382, with Wisconsin Dells finishing second (395), Lakeside Lutheran third (411) and Lancaster fourth (448).
The WIAA Division 2 sectional will be held Oct. 6 at Drugan’s Castle Mound course in Holmen.
