MONTICELLO — The Ponies opened their boys basketball season with a convincing 64-45 win over Parkview Dec. 1.
Peter Gustafson poured on 31 points, including 16 in the first half as Monticello took a 32-24 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Rudy Wicker added 9 points for the Ponies, while Evan Guenther had 8. Logan Blum hit a pair of first half 3-pointers for six points in the game, and Kade Ace and Tristin Flanagan each had five points for Monticello. The Ponies committed just 10 fouls in the contest, went 5-for-9 from the free throw line and hit seven 3s.
Tyler Oswald led Parkview with 20 points, including four 3-pointers. Parkview attempted just two free throws in the game, both coming in the second half. The Vikings also committed just 11 fouls.
The Ponies were back in action Dec. 3 against Albany, and have a nonconference contest scheduled for Dec. 5 against Royall at Justagame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.
Girls Basketball
New Glarus 69, Fort Atkinson 54
NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights improved to 2-0 with a solid win over the Division 2 Blackhawks Dec. 1.
Freshman Lindsey Schadewalt scored 17 points to lead New Glarus, while Jaylynn Benson had 16. Shealyn Klosterman-Havens added 10 points, and Lily Nommensen scored 9.
Taylor Marquart led Fort Atkinson with 26 points, and Tyla Staude scored 19. Only two other Blackhawks scored.
The Knights have a couple of major matchups ahead on the schedule. Black Hawk, winner of 53 straight games, was slated to play at New Glarus Dec. 3, and Capitol Conference champion Marshall, the 2019 state champion and sectional final qualifier last season, is scheduled to face the Knights Dec. 8.
Albany 65, Parkview 26
ALBANY — The Comets outscored the Vikings 34-12 in the first half to pace a victory Dec. 1 in the season opener.
Gracie Freitag led Albany with 16 points, including 12 in the first half. Alana Durtschi finished with 11, Payton Wachholz had 10, and Kaiya Zurfluh and Brianna Dahl each had 8 for the Comets.
Albany made 27 baskets in the contest, including three 3s, and finished 8 for 12 from the charity stripe.
The Comets take the court again Dec. 10 for a home game against Argyle.
Shullsburg 42, Darlington 30
SHULLSBURG — The Redbirds lost to the Miners Nov. 28.
Taylor Wedig led Darlington with 11 points, while Cayla Golackson and Laura Sturtz each had 6. Layla Alt paced Shullsburg with 10 points, with Madison Russell and Kayla Klotz each tallying 9.
Darlington led 21-20 at halftime, but the Miners shut down the visiting Redbirds with a 22-9 run in the second half.
Platteville 52, Darlington 29
PLATTEVILLE — The Redbirds fell to 0-3 on the season after a 25-point loss to the Hillmen, which qualified for the state tournament a year ago.
Camryn Nies led Platteville with 19 points, while Lizzie Poller had 9 and Emma Rooney, Maddie Cooley and Madison Devlin each scored 7 points.
Darlington trailed 25-13 at halftime and were outscored 29-16 in the second half. Up next for the Redbirds is a home contest against Lancaster Dec. 5, followed by another home game Dec. 10 versus Cuba City.
