Margarete Hermine Schumacher
Margarete Hermine Schumacher

Margarete Hermine Schumacher, 94, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at Eagle Point Assisted Living in Appleton, WI.  She was born October 12, 1929 to Leopold C. and Margarete (Holaus) Chocholous in Vienna, Austria.  There she grew up amid the horrors of WWII.  Toward the end of the war, she met an American soldier, our dad, Alton R. Schumacher, in Vienna.  In 1947, 18-year-old Margarete left war torn Vienna, alone, and traveled across the world to the US to marry our dad in Monroe.

Margarete is survived by her daughter Susan (Gary) Hopp of Appleton, WI and son Alton (Eva) Schumacher in Vienna, Austria. She is predeceased by her husband Alton and brother, Leopold F. Chocholous.

Mom was proud to get her American citizenship but she never forgot her Viennese heritage as well.  She and dad enjoyed visiting Vienna and Austria many times during their retirement years.

She always said, “Remember who you are and where you come from.”

A Celebration of Margarete’s Life will be held this spring/summer.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to any local humane society in Margarete’s name.  Shriner Hager Gohlke Funeral Home is assisting the family.  Condolences may be sent to the family at: shriner111.com.
