MHS nets five players all-conference; Raiders ready for playoffs

MONROE — The Monroe Cheesemakers finished the regular season in girls soccer with a tie and a loss.

The Cheesemakers went to Mazomanie to face Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld in nonconference action on Tuesday, May 26 and played to a 1-1 tie.

The Cheesemakers scored in the first five minutes on a goal by Mara Dickson off an assist by Mary McKenzie on a corner kick to go up 1-0.

It stayed 1-0 until the 77th minute when Wisconsin Heights/Barneveld was awarded a free kick and converted. The match ended a couple of minutes later deadlocked at 1-1.

On Thursday, May 28, the Cheesemakers hosted Reedsburg in a nonconference match. The Cheesemakers lost 7-0 in the final Monroe High School girls soccer match at T.R. Holyoke Pitch.

The team recognized five players who received All-Conference honors. Mary McKenzie received 1st Team All-Conference on defense. Yeleiny Colorado received 2nd Team All-Conference at forward. Baileigh Jelle got 2nd Team All-Conference at midfielder. Two other players, Mara Dickson and Kennedy Voegeli, received Honorable Mention.

Monroe closed the regular season 1-10-2. They are a No. 15 seed for the WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal at No. 2 seed Sugar River on Thursday, June 4.

Sugar River 2, Stoughton 0

STOUGHTON — The Sugar River Raiders bounced back from their 1-0 loss to Madison Country Day on May 26 with a 2-0 win on the road at Stoughton in nonconference soccer on Thursday, May 28. It was the final match of the regular season for the Raiders.

Senior Kate Parman gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead with a goal assisted by senior Cora Funseth at 10:00 in the first half. In the second half, the Raiders got an insurance goal by junior Nikole Schultz at 42:11, assisted by senior Kennedi Esser.

Senior Savanah Minter and freshman Greer Coppernoll combined to give the Raiders their 13th shutout of the season. Minter had three saves in 60 minutes at goalkeeper and Coppernoll posted three saves in 20 minutes of action.

The win puts Sugar River’s record at 14-5-1. The Raiders are the No. 2 seed in the WIAA Division 3 regionals and host the Monroe Cheesemakers (No. 15 seed) in the regional semifinal on Thursday, June 4.
